Through JORNADA RESEARCH INSTITUTE’S JOURNEYS OVERSEAS PROGRAM (specializing in making education awesome), we have designed a tour of Northern Scotland (the northern Highlands, Orkney Islands, and Lewis and Harris Islands) that focuses on Neolithic, Bronze-Age, Iron-age, and Medieval archaeological and historical sites and cultural landscapes. This tour’s highlights will include:

  • Urquhart Castle (13th Century), on the shore of Loch Ness, and Dunrobin Castle and Gardens (14th Century to present) will bring history to the present day.
  • Ferry to Lewis to visit the Callanish standing stones, used to monitor the Nodal cycle of the moon, Dun Carloway Broch, a Norse mill, and the Iron-Age site at Bostadh.
  • Travel the northwest coast, where we will learn about the geology of this part of the Isles while enjoying the scenic landscape.
  • On Orkney, visit the Neolithic landscape of the Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness, Barnhouse, and Ness of Brodgar (under excavation).
  • In Kirkwall, tour St Magnus Cathedral and Bishop’s and Earl’s Palaces with a local guide.
  • Visit Maes Howe (burial cairn), Broch of Borwick (2.5 hrs coastal hike) and Skara Brae, the iconic Neolithic village of northern Europe excavated by V. Gordon Childe in the 1930s.
  • Before leaving Orkney, we visit the Iron-Age Broch of Gurness and on to Birsay to visit the Earl’s Palace and Brough of Birsay (low tide-accessible).
  • On our return to Inverness, visit the Grey Cairns of Camster and Carn Liath Broch.

The tour is under the direction of David and Dawn Greenwald, who will guide you through more than 5000 years of history. Some sites will have local experts or visitor centers providing interpretations.

Tour fees include 10 nights in 3-Star+ Hotels as we travel through the Highlands and Islands, airport transfers, entrance fees to sites, museums and attractions listed, ground transportation each day except one day in Kirkwall, all breakfasts once in Scotland, three lunches, and two dinners.
