On October 31, Michael Bletzer, Hayward Franklin and David Greenwald took Ronnie Sinclair, President of the La Joya Educational and Charitable Assistance Organization, Inc., (owners of the site of Sevilleta) to visit Sevilleta and discuss a preliminary approach to initiating investigations at this Ancestral Piro and Spanish Colonial period pueblo. Sevilleta is perhaps the best preserved of all the Piro villages located within the Rio Grande riverine setting, complete with the melted adobe ruins of the Spanish mission and convento and adobe and stone pueblo-style roomblocks. At the LJECAO Board meeting in early October, the owners authorized JRI to begin a research program at this very important village site. Very little vegetation obscures the surface, enabling tasks such as mapping and surface collecting to be accomplished quickly. Plans include establishing a grid at the site with control datums, followed by the excavation of 1 x 1 m control units this winter.
