Ongoing research at Creekside Village has resulted in a number of discoveries relating to Mesilla phase Jornada Mogollon village settlement in Tularosa Canyon. Investigations have yielded a number of radiocarbon dates that range between A.D. 650 and 780. Among the discoveries is a great kiva (123 sq meters) in size, pit houses concentrated on three adjacent terrace ridges, two separate ditch systems, a reservoir that fed one of the ditch systems, a modified artesian spring, and a series of agricultural terraces fed by the reservoir. As investigations continue with volunteers and students, we are recognizing that Creekside Village has a wealth of information that has yet to be tapped regarding settlement patterns, social and political organization, subsistence strategies, and interaction and exchange among local and regional groups. This presentation will summarize the work completed at the site over the past three years, point out the significance and implications of the accumulated data, and discuss the recently defined “dual economic and residence strategy” that evolved among sedentary groups and highly mobile collectors and gatherers during middle Mesilla phase (ca. A.D. 600-750).
