Our next excavations at Creekside Village will focus on examining the great kiva in more detail and on the excavation and testing of some of the pit houses. The excavation is scheduled for September 5 and 6 (Saturday and Sunday) over Labor Day weekend. This two-day event is limited to JRI members (due to insurance requirements). We are expanding excavations in the kiva to search for a hearth and other features to help document its construction and allow comparisons to be made with great kivas from other areas. We also plan to open the south half of Feature 11, the first pit house that we have tested, and hope to test other depressions on the site that we believe are pit houses.

If you have not seen other recent posts regarding our efforts at Creekside Village, we received results from two radiocarbon samples from the kiva. One came from the first main support post that we encountered and produced a date of A.D. 673 +/- 26 years. The other came from a beam recovered from adjacent to the bench on the south side of the kiva; it produced a date of A.D. 704 +/- 24 years.

Participation is free to Jornada Research Institute members. See our Membership page if you wish to become a member or Donate to our efforts. Thank you in advance for your interest and support.
