Spaniards roved throughout Santa Cruz County leaving important records of their encounters with indigenous occupants. Sonoita Creek is one of the less studied valleys where Father Kino and later Europeans documented resident populations, including their violent encounters with Apaches. Recent archaeological investigations, in concert with documentary sources, have identified a number of Sobaipuri-O’odham sites in the Sonoita Creek drainage, including one referenced as Sonoidag by Kino and another as Sonoita by later visitors. Guevavi and Calabasas were also important historical places and new information about the distribution of these indigenous villages and the ages of adobe structures at these sites provide much revised perspectives about the history of the region.
