On April 28th, we will be visiting Waterhole Canyon on the Lincoln
National Forest. The Waterhole Canyon Site is a large rock shelter (once
much larger than today)that contains numerous pictographs, many that are
life-size Jornada masks, plus other zoomorphic figures in shades of red,
orange, and yellow, plus one of the largest Jornada masks ever identified.
This rock shelter may have been a large ceremonial chamber when in use,
much like an amphitheater. We will meet in Tularosa at 8:00 at the wye and
carpool to Ruidoso and then take the Forest Road to where we will hike for
about 3 miles to the shelter. This hike is ca. 6 miles round trip and I
rate it as hard, mostly because of the decent into the canyon bottom and
then the climb back out, following game trails. If you have any knee or
ankle problems, or respiratory problems, do not attempt this hike. As far
as vehicles, you will need four-wheel drive. Please let me know if you
plan to join us on this hike. For folks in the Ruidoso area, perhaps we
can meet at the Hubbard Museum parking lot about 8:45.
