Saturday, March 21, will be a field day for students from Alamogordo High School. This will be an introduction to archaeology, while visiting the Rio Tularosa Project area and learning about archaeological methods while participating in excavations within the great kiva. Students will learn basic techniques (excavations of arbitrary levels, screening, setting up grid units, use of line levels and measuring depths, recording observations, etc.). The day’s program will include a description of the natural setting and geology of Tularosa Canyon, the archaeological setting, and how people met their daily needs through resource availability and organizational strategies.
