Dr. Michael Bletzer has scheduled the next session at Sevilleta Pueblo for April 15 – 17th. Efforts are being focused on the Area I mound (formerly presumed to be the mission of San Luis Obispo), which now may be a room block that was constructed to the southeast of the main part of the site. Past efforts have shown that the west end of the Area I mound does contain some architectural features and artifacts that are of Spanish association (perhaps indicating that these rooms represent the convento or rooms used by Spanish colonists). During the previous field session, some wall clearing and mapping was conducted on another architectural unit at the site that Michael now indicates is likely the mission building. This church was probably built in 1627/1628. If enough participants can attend and lend assistance to Michael, he would like to complete stratigraphic tests within this mission structure to confirm the assessments from the previous session. If you would like to participate, please contact Michael directly via email at michael.bletzer@gmail.com. Tzelaqui/Sevilleta pueblo is located along the Camino Real along the east side of the river south of US 60 near the community of La Joya, NM, and was a Piro Pueblo that was abandoned in 1680/1681 (during the Pueblo Revolt). Bring your lunch, dig kit (we have shovels and larger tools), water and layered clothing, gloves, and sunscreen. See you at Sevilleta!
