Picax-Ande was perhaps the most significant Apache leader in history, in terms of impact on politics, culture, and military developments of the day. He represents a major untold chapter in Southwestern history and through study of him a profile emerges of Lipan Apache presence that is hardly known and stands in stark contrast to the iconic desert and mountain fighters that emerged during the American period. Our translation of Ugalde’s diary from 1788 provides new insights into this important leader whose far-reaching reputation extended from what is today the borderlands, from SW Kansas to Zacatecas and from Louisiana to Durango. Because he was not a product of Anglo newsprint like Geronimo and Cochise, he is not widely known today.
