On April 23rd, JRI is scheduling an open day of participation at Creekside Village. This day is open to all members and anyone who wishes to become a member of Jornada Research. There is much to do at the site and this is a good opportunity to see the site before it gets really hot and help with excavations in the kiva. Our primary objective will be to complete the excavations of the west trench so we have a complete East-West profile exposed that can be mapped. During our most recent excavation session, a small group of us exposed more of the kiva floor in the west trench and defined the west bench and portions of the upper wall.  We found some well-preserved portions of the west bench face in the west trench and some areas that may have been damaged when the upper wall collapsed, plus some rodent disturbance that damage the bench surface. We also found an unusual and unexpected adobe wall that was constructed on the edge of the bench (something that I have not encountered before). While removing the roof fall previously, we noted that the burned roof left a pattern of beams and cross beam stains on the kiva floor. This pattern (along with pockets of interbedded adobe materials) help demonstrate how the roof was constructed. Please contact David Greenwald via email at dgreenwald@tularosa.com to confirm your interest in participating on April 23rd. Bring your lunch, dig kit (we have shovels and larger tools), water and layered clothing, gloves, and sunscreen. We look forward to your assistance and interest.
