The sixth Tularosa Basin Conference was held in Ruidoso on June 2, 3, and 4 with tours on June 5. Twenty-four speakers gathered to present on recent and updated studies that covered topics on history, prehistory, geomorphology, botany, iconography and symbolism, fossil trackways, shrines, remote sensing, and sampling in archaeology. On the evening of June 2nd, Dr. Deni Seymour presented the keynote address, titled: Men of Iron, Gods of Thunder and Lightning. Her presentation focused on recently discovered Francisco Vazquez de Coronado sites in southern Arizona. Her investigations have demonstrated that as the Coronado Expedition ventured northward, it was harassed and likely attacked by local indigenous groups. She presented a short history of the expedition’s route but largely focused on her recent and ongoing investigations in southern Arizona.

The conference was well attended, with 146 registered attendees. As has been part of the Tularosa Basin Conference from the beginning, the conference mission has been to bring members of the interested and supportive public together with researchers. We encourage knowledgeable members of the region to present on topics that they have accumulated information and share with others an otherwise untapped source. For some presenters, this was their first before an audience, while seasoned veterans interfaced with professionals and members of the public alike.

We would thank each presenter for sharing their research with us and the interested public. We also wish to once again thank those who helped sponsor the conference.
