Tour to Alamo Mountain, March 16

David Greenwald will lead a tour to the Alamo Mountain petroglyph site on March 16 to visit various locations of rock art. This tour is free but limited to current Jornada Research Members. While at the site, some of the subtle architectural features (often attributed to the Apache) will be pointed out that he is recording, and assuming there is enough time we will visit the mammoth rub stone. We plan to meet at the old Walmart Store on the south side of Alamogorda (just south of the US 54 junction with US 70) off of US 54 heading to El Paso. We will need to leave Alamogordo at 6:45 AM as the drive will take approximate 2:45 min. Space will be available in Dave’s vehicle and carpooling is advised. If you wish to your own vehicle, please be advised that the roads can be in poor condition, so good clearance and good tires are recommended. Much of the drive is on unpaved roads. Plan to bring a pack for water, lunch, personal items, camera, sturdy hiking shoes (lots of cactus and thorns that go through light weight shoes), a walking stick or trekking poles, layers as it will likely be winding and chilly. There will be some uphill climbing required to get to some of the more interesting panels. Snakes should not be encountered this time of year. Please be aware that cell reception is extremely limited and that restrooms are not available at the car park and finding adequate vegetation cover can be challenging. Please be prepared to practice “no-trace hiking”.

Tour to Bonito Canyon (Petroglyph Trail) March 17

On March 17, Sunday morning, David Greenwald will be leading a tour in Bonito Canyon to the Bonito Petroglyph site and visit a few other interesting features in the area. Hiking of the area will be on good trails, although some mud may be encountered. Anticipate cool temperatures and bring water, camera, layers, good hiking shoes, lunch, etc. Again, this tour will be free but limited to current JRI members. We will visit some of the historic ditches that Dave is recording, which may be of prehistoric origin. We will meet in Tularosa at the wye (usual meeting point for Creekside) for those from the Alamogordo/Tularosa area, leaving promptly at 7:30 AM and carpool to Alto. Those from the Ruidoso area can meet us along Hwy 220 at the entrance to the Spencer Theater at 9:00 AM. The road to the trailhead can be rough and not recommended for low-clearance vehicles. There is a place to park your vehicle and then crowd in to other vehicles that can access the area better. For some of you, you may wish to visit Ft Stanton or Lincoln in the afternoon.
