Hello Members and Supporters:
We are still planning on excavating at Creekside Village this coming weekend, Labor Day weekend, Sept 3rd and 4th even though we continue to get rain. I visited the site earlier this week and we have had significant moisture but not too much to get some excavation work completed. We intend to continue efforts in the kiva (removing the fill from the SE ¼ to expose the floor, expose the bench, and hopefully find evidence of the entryway. We also have two pit structures in progress that we need to continue in, but both are pretty wet right now. More recently I have been excavating shovel trenches to expose portions of a new ditch that we found this summer. Students from UTEP will also be working over Labor Day weekend on Feature 11 under the direction of Dale Frost, who will use the information for his Master’s thesis. Nearly half of this large pit house is open and they are exposing portions of the floor. Given the time of year, I anticipate that it will still be hot (humid) and we may still get rain, so plan accordingly for the heat and rain. Also, you may need to wade across the Rio Tularosa as our bridge has been removed by recent flooding. I found two planks to substitute for our bridge. Let’s meet at the “y” in Tularosa at 8:00 am (old gas station at the intersection of US 54 and US 70).
Again, on September 24th and 25th we are planning for another 2-day field session at Creekside Village. Efforts will be determined by what is completed during the Labor Day weekend session. It should be on the mild side regarding the weather, but be prepared for the heat and rain. Meeting/starting time and location to be announced, but probably at the “y” in Tularosa at 8:00 am.
